The first-time manager series

I. The change

We go through three stages of change when transitioning from individual contributors to team leaders or first-time managers (stopping, stalling, and starting over). If we reach and feel comfortable in the third phase, we will know that the change has been successful. The transformation will not be successful unless we reach the third phase of change.

Stopping:

The initial S, or phase, is referred to as “stopping.” We put an end to what we’re doing right now. If you’re transitioning from a team member to a team manager, for example, you’ll need to cease completing the tasks of that team member role and stop identifying with the group you used to be a part of.

Stalling:

Stalling is the second phase, or S, of the transition process. Things appear chaotic and unclear during the stalling phase, and you are unsure how things will turn out. You’ll undoubtedly feel compelled to return to the previous state of affairs. As a first-time manager, you may not know how to communicate with your team, whom to seek advice from, or what to do if team members are unwilling to cooperate. Stalling is a normal part of the process, and it’s important to get through it. It’s best if you don’t fight it. The danger of the stalling phase is that if you stay in it too long, you will miss the last phase, or S, and will have to restart.

Starting over:

In this final phase, you will begin to understand what is expected of you, gain new skills, and become comfortable in your new role. Prepare yourself for a considerable period of time throughout this phase. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t succeed as a manager right away.

What do you have to stop doing right now so you can succeed in your new role?

What do you have to begin doing so you can succeed in your new role?

If you are or plan to be a first-time manager and you are ready for an amazing transformation and support reach out to me. I train first-time managers to develop their skills (primary and leadership skills) and support them on their goals.
